Being a blog all about dance, I didn't think I could let this week go by without telling you about New York City Dance Week. That's right: June 20-29th in New York City. 10 days of nonstop FREE dance celebration and education! NYCDW is an event that's not to be missed. It's a great opportunity to try new kinds of dance and fitness at studios throughout the five boroughs of New York. According to their mission statement, "The event engages the community and families to experience dance, encouraging them to live active, healthy lifestyles. The organization moves beyond traditional dance forms to teach participants how all dance genres benefit mind, body and spirit." Check out their website to see a list of events and participating studios.
Need to fine tune your turn out or get some upper body strength? In addition to dance classes, you can participate in fitness labs through their program Fit Engine! There's even one dance-based lab for Indian dancing.
The festival also has a sister project called NYC10 that is an opportunity for choreographers and companies to show 10 minutes of their work to the diverse audience of NYCDW. Tickets are $12 and the next show is Wednesday, June 26th if you want to see what's new and upcoming in the world of dance.
